I, too, had massive problems with 1.0.2 when MAIL was not defined.
The problems went away upon using the MAIL option, which is really rather
nice.  SCR_MAIL is not #ifdefd in hack.onames.c; fixing this may or may
not correct the problem if you don't want MAIL on.

Saved games with enscriptions now seem to work.  The bug fix for
trying to inscribe with fingers when holding a cursed weapon also works
perfectly.
