So I used XBIN and MACPUT to try to transfer some public domain programs from my VAX account to my Mac. The settings (MacTerminal -0.15 Alpha) were 8-bit, no parity, modem, and Macintosh. I got the transfer percentage "thermometer" to appear on the screen. What happened after that varied a bit/byte. In one case, I got a half-hour of code mostly streaming down the right edge of the MacTerminal window with lots of "beeping". In other cases, I got a "Bad MacFile" error box. Sometimes I just got the dollar-sign prompt back. In all cases, I got vestiges of files (0-1K). The icon for each of these files was either a Macwrite icon (!) or, I think, a Macterminal document icon. The final humiliation is that I can no longer access anything on the disk. MacTerminal is set as the startup application and attempts to QUIT, SAVE, and SAVE AS... crash the system ("invalid queue element".) Other clues: o XBIN seemed to work. It converted xxxx.HEX to xxxx.DAT, .RSR;2, .RSR;1, and .INF. o I suspect my problem has to do with the version of MacTerminal I am using. The documentation for MacPut says it was meant for newer versions of MacTerminal but an option exists to use -0.15. How do I exercise that option? Or is this not the problem at all? I'd appreciate your guidance. Please send me mail and save the net from this "trivial pursuit" Thanks.
