Joy Division et al definitely knew how to sound deeeepressed and
out of it, but for that mind-crushed-to-dust-by-reality sound
you can't beat "The Overload" on the Talking Head's "Remain in Light".
It's even beyond Brian Eno. The amazing thing is that it's somewhat
listenable for something so oppressive. It's one thing to slam
the listener against to wall with distortion or whining, but to
turn the aural field to quivering liquifacting heat, that's art.
