I know what you mean about Messiean .  I once directed a television
concert of the quartet for the end of time, the solo clarinet moving.
Also, he wrote a piano solo called catalogue of the birds, complete
with one paragraph scenarios of what the birds are doing in each
piece.  I think it's about 9 volumes of piano music.
