Yes - violating copyrights is a "bad thing". But, I got the impression that the particular album is no longer available for sale, and that the only way to get a copy is to tape one, or buy a used copy, neither of which provide any revenue to the copyright holder. I can't see this as wrong. He would like to do the "right thing", but can't. Perhaps the best solution would be to tape it, and then send a couple of bucks off to the Dead, or the record company (or ASCAP, etc.).
