I read, somewhere, that 1200 baud modems squeeze more bits into a
limited bandwidth by using phase shift modulation with 4 possible phase
shifts.  I don't remember if they use any other means to squeeze more
bits in.  It doesn't really matter.  It is clear that 1200 baud modems
transmit information in base "n", where "n" is at least 4.  Yet it's
also clear from the Bible that God only approves of binary
communications.

I regret the effect this will have on those who work at home using 1200
baud modems, but after all, using 300 baud is a small price to pay to
save your eternal soul.
