I seem to recall a designer of movie clothes (might've been Edith Head) remarking that there was a considerable difference between designing clothes to flatter actresses, esp. ones with oomphy figures, and designing clothes which are interesting in the abstract. In the former case, the role of the clothes is reduced in oder to enhance the woman wearing them (which is, you would think, what Jane Average wants, too); in the latter, the model should distract as little as possible from the lines of the clothes themselves.
