About a decade ago there was a Star Trek "event" at the Memorial
Coloseium in Portland which featured "The Cage" (in B&W cuz NBC threw
away the color version!) and the blooper reel.  Gene also gave a
fascinating lecture about how he "talked" with the characters when he
was developing the framework of the series.

Afterwards Gene answered questions from the audience, one of which
concerned the number of starships in the various fleets.   His answer:
As many as he felt like.
