Why should I have sympathy for the poor parents? If the kids have a reason to scream (fresh wounds, sudden illness, etc.) the parents *should* be doing something about it. If the kids don't have a reason to scream, and the parents allow them to do it in a public restaurant, I see no reason to be sympathetic towards them. As far as 'endure what our parents had to endure' goes, I guess that the author is saying that *his* parents were the kind that allowed him to scream for no reason.
