Can't help you there, but do you really need to use dbm? I just ran pathalis to produce a text file, ran sort on the file, and use look(1) to extract sites quickly with binary-search. (We have a "uupath" shell file which basically just runs look $1 /u/map/uupath.) By the way, look at the References line above.
