It *can* happen. With children though, it tends to be a matter of overzealous pedestrians running into bicyclists. A few kids at the local elementary school seem to see no problem with waiting until the last possible moment to dash out in front of hapless bicyclists. I've had this happen to me three times in the space of two years, and I have avoided more incidents by not using that route very frequently.
