I second your comments about the goodness of the ENC of Philosophy,
Paul Hastings Ed., Free Press, etc.

I own a set which I got for joining the -giggle- Conservative Book Club.
But it's - though outdated in some areas as you say - really great for 
saving a trip the local library on some topics.
