Yes, in the past students have been responsible for purchasing items needed for their education. For a music major, an instrument can obviously fall into that category. However, a) it is yet unclear if a PC is necessary to education and b) the music majors and architecture majors who needed to pour lots of money into strange items at least had their choice of what they were going to buy. Nobody tells all incoming flute majors at Julliard that they have to buy a Model 25 B silver flute by Bach even if they already have a flute that's just as good. Requiring the purchase of a specific PC (ANY specific PC) is absolutely ludicrous. Requiring that students own a PC that meets certain functional specifications would be better.
