The reason given is that nylon can melt due to heat induced by friction (as in sliding along the pavement), and the melting nylon can cause burns and infection. We (I am an MSF-certified instructor) do NOT suggest avoiding nylon; just don't wear unlined nylon with no underlayer. A nylon jacket is fine, as long as it's lined with (for example) cotton, or worn over a long sleeved cotton shirt. In fact, many good rainsuits are made of treated nylon.
