Many people have replied that the poor counter person is told that they must commit this obnoxious practice or get canned. There is a way to fight the management. It is rare for a menial to get hired at one these type places to do one single job (ie, counter help). Therefore, IF the management complains (= bitches) at you for not asking the costumer if they want something else, just tell the management (= scumbag) to put somebody else on the line to handle the paying public and let you do something interesting. If you all gang up on the management in this way (be careful that the management (= idiots) does not find out that this is a conspiracy, but they wouldn't anyway because they're not too bright about what is going on anyway) they'll run out of counter help! Believe me, I've done this and it works. It's just a mild form of striking. For the brave at heart, just tell the management that you will NOT say, "Do you want any fries?". This also works because often the management will take to some people with "spunk" (GOD how I hated that word). I have NEVER, EVER allowed any management of any food place that I worked at run rough-shod over myself or any of my co-workers. And, I never got fired either. I quit once but that is another story (We all quit and most of us went to the place across the street!). Sam -- uucp: {ut-sally,ut-ngp,noao,charm}!utastro!pso arpa: pso@ut-ngp or pso@ut-sally
