(Program to reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere). The program started over the Christmas season about three years ago and has spread across both the Province and time of the year (eg Kitchener Waterloo's Oktoberfest -The great Noth American Beer fest). Initially the program was decried as being against civil rights, and inneffective, but with the last years statistics a decrease in a) accidents and b) arrest related to drunk driving have been noted (I will try to drag up the numbers for a subsequent posting). While being challenged by the police is a bit 1984ish for me, for the most part one is stopped, a polite question is asked and the person is waved through. Just last week, a hayride for a kids hockey team was slammed into by an intoxicated driver, his license had just been suspended a week earlier. He fell through the net, but if we don't take every chance to stop these people, then we aren't doing enough. Oh, the kid is still in Intensive care.... -- ~~ Mike Upmalis (mupmalis@watarts)
