How about do-dos in the left turn lane who pull out into the intersection
and get stuck by another do-do from the opposing direction?  This is called
"gridlock", and can be learned about (and from!) in any good Civil Engineering
or Computer Science text.

My favorite solution for cretins who proceed through the intersection
regardless of anyone else (and then block traffic for two hours or so) is
sixteen-ton weights dropped from helicopters...

There are reasons that the laws state "do not proceed through the intersection
until you are sure you can get out".
