On boot, DOS looks for a file called "CONFIG.SYS" which it expects contains the names of user written device drivers. It will then load them in (they have to be on your boot disk). This is run before the AUOTEXEC.BAT file is executed. In the 2.00 manual, ther is a sizeable appendix dealing with user written device drivers.
