On Saturday, May 4th, a bit of Unix and Usenet history was made: Smoot
Carl-Mitchell was elected to the city council of Austin, Texas.  In addition
to being a long-time neighborhood and environmental activist, Smoot has been
employed as a Unix wizard at the University of Texas for some time now.
Although far outspent by his real-estate-developer-backed opponent, he won
handily.  City political observers are giving credit for his win to the
efforts of his most loyal backers, Hackers of Austin for Smoot's Politics
[HASP] :-) .

Those wishing to congratulate Smoot can send him fan mail at the address
