A few years ago I moved into a new development. Behind our backyard was a farmer's field of alpha hay. It was about 300 yards wide and ended at the edge of some woods and a swampy kind of stream. At the edge of the woods were some particularly large trees. In the largest tree directly behind our house a Great Horned Owl was nesting. I was able to observe them for about 3 months before they left the nest. Since the area has been developed more I have not seen any of them for about 2 1/2 years. But on certain clear summer nights they can be heard claiming their territory. I would esitmate they (it) are about 1 mile away when I can hear them at night now. The chance to see these magnificent creatures close up was truly rewarding. I hope that some of you get the same chance. -- Name : Bill Duym US Mail : Monmouth College, W.
