I believe that these books are the "Mushroom Planet" books.  All I remember is
that some kids meet a strange old man who helps them to build a mock-up of a
space ship.  Unbeknownst to the kids he modifies it into the real thing and
takes them to the Mushroom Planet.  The kids have various adventures before
returning home.  There were 2-4 books in the series; my grade school's library
had them all.
