As to the second point: Temple prostitution has been instituted in two religions that I know of: (yes, I like colons!) The misc. temples of Aphrodite in Ancient Greece. In certain cities there were laws to FORCE all women, after they were married, to "contribute" to the temple by one act of prostitution. For the, shall we say, less favored this could take months and the women were not allowed out of the temple grounds untill the act of worship was *um* consumated. I can not remember the exact goddess, but in India there is a goddess, again of Sex, that has temple prostitution as an act of worship. Orgies, while not strictly prostitution, were common among the Germanic tribes during the Age of Migration (400 to 1066) untill they became Christian. There is one account from an Arab traveller of mass groupings among the Swedish merchants in Russia around 980 (if I re- member correctly). Andy Thornton
