Perhaps it's time to creat one (1) version of binhex which will handle versions 2-5. Pick any mac interface method you like to select the version. Maybe it could even take a look at the file and figure it out. Also, Dennis Brothers has worked up a file transfer standard for mac files. It is supposed to be protocol independant and will probably become widely used.
