It was conceived (and the pilot was written) by Harlan Ellison. When Ellison saw the resulting program, he was *extremely* unhappy with it, and refused to have his name appear in the credits. (He supplied them with a pseudonym, "Cordwainer Bird" that conveyed some small portion of his contempt). Ellison subse- quently wrote a book called "The Starcrossed", dealing with the whole incident.
