Just to confuse the issue a bit, California State Senator Ed Davis (yes, the retired LA police chief) has recently antagonized his conservative supporters by strongly supporting a bill outlawing discrimination against homosexuals, even to the point of proclaiming his support for gay rights in the LA Times.
