I had a problem with clicking sounds when playing back tapes, an
intermittent problem.  It was very annoying, with no apparent pattern.  
A soft click every three or four seconds.  Then, once while this was
happening, I noticed that the mechanical counter was stuck, and the
low-order digit was twitching every time I heard the clicking!! :-)
