The best way to describe it is as a sort of I have an 85 RX7-GSL-SE with less than 2,000 miles on it. I have experienced the exact same problem you describe. I am fairly certain the problem is a seal problem at the gas cap. Try removing your gas cap the next time you hear the noise. We haven't had hot enough weather lately for me to check the problem further. When it happens again I hope to solve it. Just wanted you to know that you aren't the only one with this problem.
