Shapiro) writes: (while describing his ideal personal) >and at least a 20Mbyte hard disk with an access time no higher >than 30 ns. i could use a few that fast on our vax. surely you mean 30ms. as for CPU killers, i did some stuff for a 4th year project that required just over 2 CPU hours on an IBM 3081. using a few rough scalings, that's on the order of 50 CPU hours on a 11/780, for one run. i needed to do 3 correct ones. there are a few of us that will run any CPU made into the ground. i would not even dream of using anything less than a vax even for scaled down testing. i think that the UVM decision was based on the "average" student needs in the particular faculties and was as much political as technical. what were the technical qualifications of the people who made the recommendations and the decisions for this action? if this has already been discussed (i don't remember seeing it), then please send e-mail.
