I hate to sound condescending, but did you notice that the two grips are different sizes? The one with the larger ID is for the right side/throttle pipe and the left for the left side/bare bar. I used to squirt a bunch of contact cleaner on the pipe/bar and shove the grip on. The stuff dries quickly and the grip won't slide off.
