In reference to the message about smoking in a terminal room:
 
I recently graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Instsitute. WPI (three
letter acronym for the school) has a terminal area that has about 20
terminals wired to a DEC-20 and about 20 terminals wired to a WANG word
processor. There is a strict NO SMOKING rule in the terminal area as most
users do find it offensive. However, there is a designated area OUTSIDE
the user area that is used for smokers. The reason: Smoke does harmful
things to terminals such as VT100's and especially work stations! If you
go into any machine room that houses main frames, you will notice that
smoking is strictly forbidden.
 
My own opinion: Personally, if someone wants to smoke that is their
business. But please be polite about it. If the consensus(sp) is that
the majority says OK, then fine. I have a slight reaction to the smoke
so you will not see me around. Of all places to smoke, a restaurant
non-smoking section isn't the most intelligent. It is too bad that people
addicted to the nicotine have to be rude sometimes to give themselves
a fix but we non-smokers should try to understand.

PS - My grandmother died 3 years ago. Cause not lung cancer BUT she did
     chain smoke for many years. She died because her brain was not getting
     enough oxygen due to her smoking. She was in an oxygen tent for her
     last 2 months alive. Her age: 67.
