In a past Dragon issue it discussed saints, one of them had the following background. Sweet and short: The Paladin was of 15th level and in a campaign where something like a Moorcock scenario was going on, where evil was making a desperate bid for power. In a bid for more power the Paladin released HORDES of Mammoth Eviltude upon the relative plane the gambit was on. To combat other saints of a more good nature the Lords of Hell etc. rewarded the fallen paladin and made him into the King of the Death knights! Stats to be found in Dragon. Regarding familiars. I don't mean to push my own ideas down your throats but why not add a hit die to all such spells- or allow the spell to be cast where the familiar is via the psychic link! (cf. Projected Image). Something like: "that little black cat just threw a fireball!!" Or, "you don't know what happened but the where you once were standing there is now just a large pit..." in the case of a high level illusionist npc foe. Thoughts?
