Vaults store untold riches, right? Who is rich as ...? Why, Croesus, of course. Spelling does vary (Cresus, Croesus for Latin version, Kroisos for Greek), which explains the presence of two names as reported. Croesus was a King of Lydia in times of classical Greece, and was reputed fabulously rich (all sorts of fables were made up about him and his treasures). Hence the saying "Rich as Croesus."
