I don't remember the motivation for it anymore (as if I knew it then?--part of it was probably my incredible fear of thunder and lightning), but I do know the solution that my folks tried on me, which I think worked. They created a "sleep chart", which they hung in pretty fair view in the kitchen. Each night, they would "grade" me on my sleeping: "Excellent" if I was not heard from, and lower grades if I was particularly difficult. I guess there was enough pre-med in me at the time to go for the high grades, because it worked. It may not work for the very young; but could be applicable to children nursery-school age and up. I think I was about 4 years old at the time. By the way, I *still* think that my dad's bed is more comfortable than mine; and I can't imagine why they didn't want me around. :-} -- Martin Miller Harvard University Science Center ...harvard!h-sc1!miller
