The small extra charge is worth it because you don't have to pay until at least a box comes. I'm not sure if the USPS or UPS will let you open the box before paying, but at least you don't have to deal with non-shipment. Many firms refuse to accept COD orders because they are so marginally capitalized they can't afford the cash-flow problems. Since these are the very firms with the worst record of filling orders, demanding COD tends to select out vendors with problems.
