What about that old experiment with rats? I can remember seeing a PBS NOVA (or
something of that nature) show dealing with population control.

It seemed that a rat population given enough food and limited space would
excercise a form of population control. Some turned "gay" and therefore did not
contribute to the future rat population. Others became violent and attacked,
killed, etc. their cohorts. 

It sounds unusual, but offers many parallels to today's society.
<But then again, China isn't a good example....)
