I rather like R. Hoppin's MEDIEVAL MUSIC, Norton, 1978, ISBN 0 393 09090 6 It DOES tend to get technical, though. I picked it up in like-new condition at a used book store for $5.00, and have since learned that it is a rather standard college text on the subject. It ties together with the Norton ANTHOLOGY OF MEDIEVAL MUSIC. I'm finding it useful for the anthology of medieval Polish Christmas carols I'm editing...
