Herb Caen writes a daily "gossip column" for the San Francisco Chronicle. At the top of today's column: CULTURE VULTURES: Even though 16,000 tickets have already been sold at $15 each, the Grateful Dead is canceling its appearances at Cal Expo in Sacramento June 8-9. The official reason is "scheduling conflicts." The real reason is that three members of the great rock group - Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh - have tickets to the S.F. Opera's "Ring" cycle on those dates and the band members voted to cancel rather than deny the three their Wagnerian pleasures.
