   I'd like to point out that (3) above implicitly assumes the truth
of (1) or (2). This is one of the things that make me uncomfortable.
We often let a desire for something attractive (and initially nebulous,
so that its implications are not obvious!) transform some of our 
hypotheses into conclusions.
