There doesn't appear to be a news group for camping, so  I'll try here.

What are the laws in the U.S. regarding camping other than on designated
camp-sites? Can I find a pleasant spot by a river, somewhere, and just
pitch a tent or will the local enforcers hassle me?  This question assumes
that the land is public and not privately owned. Is it generally the case
that wilderness in the U.S. is not privately-owned?
