Before it was renovated, the longest distance to the wall from the plate was something like 463 feet! The wall down the right field line was around 291 feet! Ah, yes... the distinct shape of Yankee stadium is a characteristic that I wish they didn't alter, although it still is similar. I agree with Dave about the fun in watching teams being built for their ball park. I've always been a Yankee fan (not necessarily a Steinbrenner fan, but always a Yankee fan) and one will notice the great lefty HR hitters of Yankee history: Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, Marris and more recently Reggie. Guys like Nettles, Murcer and Gamble (none are Yankees any more) were always a threat to pop one. On the other hand, I've seen guys like Winfield and Baylor tag the ball over 400 feet to left-center only to fly out. The Yankees like to staff good lefty pitchers to cause other teams to bat right-handed more. Often they had four lefties in the starting rotation during home stands. I've also seen 8 or 9 left-handed batters in the starting lineup (if the opposing pitcher is a right-handed one, of course) numerous times. Unfortunately, since I moved to North Carolina I haven't been able to follow the Yankees much, so my information is a couple of years old. All we get here is Ted Turner's Braves (the self-proclaimed "America's Team") and I'm not much of a National League fan at all. Its a very sad situation (boo hoo). Oh, well ... someone talk about the Yankees once in a while. Dan Pellegrino ittvax!ittral!pellegri P.S.- Phil Rizzuto should be in the Hall of Fame.
