Any view can be displayed using information from the sensors. In ST II while the enterprise is in the nebula the main viewscreen is a blurr of noise because the sensors are inoperative. The view of the stars while at warp speed is generated from subspace signals. So it says in the ST novel _The Abode of Life_.
