as I said before getting here, The Battlestar Class ships ARE faster than
light drive ships.  Their constraint is FUEL...

in numerous episodes the Battlestar was mentioned to have defence screens
capable of stopping energy blasts.  The key is to get under someone's shields
and blast them then.  The Battlestar class has tractor beam and most if not
all of the weapons of the NCC-1700 class (where do you think they came up 
with the neat stuff anyway :-) as well as being armed with Titan II ICBM's :-)
