And having and knowing how to use a gun is not the same thing as "blowing a hole in a person". A bullet in the knee or foot is a relatively safe and effective way of using "as much force as necessary to get him away". Nobody said you have to aim for his face. And with a little luck, you won't have to fire it at all.
