In fact, just yesterday I deleted I file I didn't want to (gggrrrr!!!) and restored it off a backup tape. This is under VMS 4.1. This worked (as far as I remember) under 4.0 as well. You do sometimes get "unexpected file change" errors when you start the restore on a volume other than the first volume. This is because BACKUP had to break something across the two tapes. If this something is a directory, maybe you should go back one tape and start the restore from there even though you KNOW the file is one the next volume. I am not sure of this, just making a suggestion. You cannot use /SELECT with /PHYSICAL. On fact, I have heard that if you do backups on the HSC-50 directly to a TA-78 (without the VAX being involved) you get /PHYSICAL backup tapes. Is this true? If so, that really makes the backup tapes fairly useless. I mean, I've had to restore an entire disk once in the last 3 years. But I have to restore people's files several time a month... Any comments? /Kevin Carosso engvax!kvc @ CIT-VAX.ARPA
