VMS Backup has a number of deficiencies, the greatest of which is probably its inability to dump to a tape drive on a remote DECnet system. Here at USC we've come up with a solution for our backups to make this work. It involves 2 DCL .COM files on each system to be backed up, a .COM file and DECnet object on the system with the tape drive, and use of BACKUP and CONVERT. It's not perfect, but it does work and is preferable to '2nd generation' (ie_ backup -> disk saveset -> tape saveset) backups (which we used to use). If individuals on INFO-VAX are interested, they can send me a message and I can forward our stuff to them. -------
