Should I ever buy a micro, I still won't be an end user -- I'll want to do some systems-level programming (if not writing a new system outright). Intel and Motorola put out chips which are each uniquely :~> baroque. (I have still not succeeded in obtaining a National manual from the alleged local distributor. Someone from National who thought I was in Toronto e-mailed me a while back, unfortunately I couldn't get mail back to him.) I would not buy the current Intel or Motorola offerings -- I'd spend too much time fighting the baroquenesses in their respective architectures. As for software: I'd be tempted to write a new system rather than using an existing one because this is my area of interest and because the existing systems are less than optimal. (The most despicable cad on the planet should not be asked to use MS-DOS. UN?X*, while being a nice environment to use, is missing a couple of important features, notably truly asynchronous I/O.) * UN?X is (after wildcard expansion) the trademark of some component of what used to be the phone company. -- The above viewpoints are mine. They are unrelated to those of anyone else, including my cats and my employer.
