Sounds to me like it might be a case of front end overload which could be related to the fact that your meter stopped working. You didn't specify brand or model of receiver, but many put a signal strength meter in the Automatic Gain Control loop. Failure of that loop could lead to signal overload. try moving your antenna around just to be sure its not some weird manifestation of multipath. If that doesn't fix it I'd strongly consider a trip to the fixit shop, unless you wanted a new one anyway - in which case this furnishes a good excuse. -- "It's the thought, if any, that counts!"
