Well, to tie this in to another major discussion on the group - that of sexist language - most men stand up because that's how their fathers did it. In other words, they're just carrying on the male tradition without thinking about what it means. That's exactly the problem the folks who want to get rid of "he" as the generic third person pronoun want to deal with. It was corny at the time, and still is, but there's a line in the play "Butterflies are Free" that says "There are none so blind as those who will not see."
