A 12 ga. shotgun (pump) will certainly do the job, but for those of you
who would rather use a pistol - I suggest you look into a load called
the Glazier (sp?) saftey slug. This bullet is absolutely unequaled
as a people stopper and it is not supposed to go thru walls. They are not 
cheap at about $17 per 6 (depending on the caliber), but they will do a
number on anyone that happens to get in the way of one. I've seen
them demoed (on plastic milk cartons full of water) and although I
hope I never get shot - I'd rather catch a 45 acp than a 380 with
one of these things. They might not be legal in all states - I've never
looked for bullets here (N.Y.) and have only seen them in Calif. 
I'm certainly not advocating using these things, but if you shoot
someone I can only assume you want to maximize your damage. These will 
do it.
