There is no way you could squeeze or jam a .45 Auto Mag round into a standard .45 ACP, even with a hammer and a lot of grease ;-), and the mechanical design of the two guns is quite dissimilar. I don't have references here at work, so I won't go into detail based on faulty memory. Nonetheless, the two are quite different in just about all respects. There ARE stainless steel versions of the "standard" M1911A1 (and, for that matter, of the preceeding model M1911), including some made by some of the same people who have made Auto Mags in the past (it was made by several different manufacturers). Maybe this caused your confusion... (The old design is just about "public domain" now, so several companies make or made copies or versions of it.) There is a caliber of ammo called ".45 Winchester Magnum", which is another, and yet different, .45 caliber auto pistol round. There are auto pistols made for THIS round which are similar in appearance to the M1911A1, and which can even be converted between this caliber and the .45 ACP (the standard .45 automatic cartridge) by replacing certain parts. This discussion ignores several other .45 caliber cartridges which I could drag in to muddy the issue still further, but I decline.... Will
